Maureen Doolan taught in special education departments in Canadian high schools and community colleges for many years. She then worked as a writer/researcher for the National Museums of Canada. In 1980 she co-founded People, Words and Change, an adult literacy program that matched volunteers with adult learners on a one-to-one basis. The program is still going strong in Ottawa. After returning to Europe she taught at Woolwich College, London and the University of Siena, Italy. In 2000 she co-founded The Pari Center for New Learning with F David Peat.
